What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes are suitable for those with respiratory conditions. They are ideal for those continuing their exercise rehabilitation following NHS pulmonary physiotherapy rehabilitation sessions. We also welcome attendees via a referral from their GP.

Our classes are led by qualified instructors in this type of specialist exercise. Sessions are carefully designed to support patients in the long–term management phase of their lung condition who wish to continue maintaining and improving their general fitness and lung health.

Who is Pulmonary Rehabilitation suitable for?

Most class members will be referred to us from the NHS pulmonary physiotherapy rehabilitation sessions once they are deemed safe to continue their exercise under the guidance of our Exercise Professional. A smaller number will join us via a GP referral.

Attendees include those managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease, Bronchitis, Emphysema,  Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and Breathing Problems.

All new attendees require a referral before they can attend. This enables us to ensure that the class is suitable for them, as some lung conditions are not deemed medically safe for a group exercise class. Please contact us for more information.

What will happen in a Pulmonary Rehabilitation class?
Our classes take place in a class, rather than gym environment and you will be exercising with others who’ve all experienced similar health problems. Over the years we’ve found that class members find the peer support they gain from exercising and chatting with others who have been through something similar to you, almost as valuable as the exercise itself.

The class starts with a warm-up followed by circuit style exercise, where you will move around, performing different exercises and using different pieces of equipment. Your instructor will encourage you to work at your own pace and level. They will monitor your progress, adapting exercises where needed. The class finishes with a cool down and stretching.

Many of our members bring their portable oxygen with them into the class.
